Busting Eardrums

Busting Eardrums
JCD Kerwin

My ears bleed
when
music rips,
matches the pounding of the tips
of my toes
on concrete.
Vibrations tangle
and
explore my organs;
they traverse the goop,
as I slowly turn
into acoustic soup.

I’d rather explode
than listen to
the cacophonic tune
of such a noisy world.

Sometimes (a lot of the time),
my favorite part
of each day
is when I’m ignoring the world
with tunes.

Because sometimes (a lot of the time),
it’s nice to pretend
I’m not me
and I’m not really sitting here
at all.

Work’s been adorable.

Old guy next to me
is rollin’ down the window of
his big rig.
He lifts a match and
lights up on his cig—
arette.
Got the ugly kind of face
to match
my darling dis—
position.

I am not amused.
I’m set on stage
as entertainment,
but
I have no balloons,
no tricks to show,
and my face
is washed away.
You laugh anyway.

Science is ridiculous.

I don’t sparkle,
shine,
or glow
like crafted gems
from caves.
I’m not special,
pristine
or wanted
like diamonds
in your safe.

But I am formed
of iron ore
and will last beyond
every dollar
you throw away.
