Old guy next to me
is rollin’ down the window of
his big rig.
He lifts a match and
lights up on his cig—
arette.
Got the ugly kind of face
to match
my darling dis—
position.

I am not amused.
I’m set on stage
as entertainment,
but
I have no balloons,
no tricks to show,
and my face
is washed away.
You laugh anyway.

I don’t sparkle,
shine,
or glow
like crafted gems
from caves.
I’m not special,
pristine
or wanted
like diamonds
in your safe.
But I am formed
of iron ore
and will last beyond
every dollar
you throw away.

I used to think
poetry
had to be
made of perfect,
pocket-sized
lines,
ready to be ingested
and shat out
like neat rows
of rosebuds.
Now,
I realize
there’s nothing
to a poem
except
the filth you pull
from inside
and smear
across
the page.

could happen
to make the story better
and i
could also
wear sweaters in winter

i could
look like a badass
pretending the ice
doesn’t really
sting
my skin
